Marlene Collins is a mixed media artist with a long history as an active member of the northern arts community, coordinating a variety of programs and projects, as well as pursuing her own practice.
Marlene's practice incorporates sculptural and 2 dimensional works. Her paintings are rarely on canvas. Boards and concrete tiles are her preferred supports for paint and collage work. Found objects often contrast with finely drawn images and fragments of text.
"My sculptural work is instinctive. The clay vessels are often symbolic; their hand-built shapes speak of organic and ancient forms. I move between allowing the form to dictate the surface and building the vessel to embody the words or script based marks and images that will cover it. I am absorbed with the inherent virtue of language, the capacity of words to carry the power of life and death."
You can see Marlene's work at the Arts Underground in Whitehorse or at her Wolf Creek studio.
