Spring Break- Kids Camps
Art Making and the Magic Nation; A boot camp for Young Artists

In this fun filled week of fine art, young artists will be building images in new ways with familiar materials. Romping through the basics of Collage, Painting, and Mixed Media, with images from their very own magic nation. Our instructor on this adventure is Meshell Melvin, beloved by young artists throughout the territory.
iPod Touch/iphone Photography and Short Film Production
Instructor: Simon D’ Amours
Date: March 11th to 15th
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (one hour lunch break from 12-1)
Ages: 8-13

Since 2005 Simon D'Amours has been producing promotional videos and photographs for commercial clients, news reports for national television and home professional video for clients around Canada. In early 2010, he created a film school based on the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad technology and since then has offered more than 30 workshops around British Columbia and Yukon including two at Arts Underground.
In this workshop Simon will guide the students in the production of short films and photography. Weather permitting, part of the workshop will be held outside using natural and man-made elements.
Students will learn how to use an iPod or an iPhone to capture images and sound and to edit them. On Friday, March 15th parents and friends will be invited to a presentation of the participant's videos and photography. Students will have the choice to communicate and to create their video in French or English.

Portraits in Colour
Instructor: Suzanne Paleczny
Date: Mondays, March 25th to May 6th (6 classes- no class on Easter Monday)
Time: 7:00 - 9:30 p.m.
Ages: 14 +

The focus of this course is to learn how to see and use colour effectively and creatively in portrait painting and drawing. Participants will experiment with a variety of techniques and media including paper collage, oil pastel, acrylic and oil paint. In the first half of the course participants will learn to mix colours to produce skin tones, shadows and highlights and will learn about the effects of under-painting, colour relationships and value in creating portraits. In the second half, we will use these skills as we work from live models.
Pastels; Pure Pigment
Instructor: Neil Graham
Date: Tuesdays, March 26th to April 30th (6 classes)
Time: 7:00 - 9:30 p.m.
Ages: 14 plus

Soft pastels are made from finely ground pure pigment. Learn how to layer and blend these amazing colours. In this course you will discover how to keep your palette clean and bright and how to work on different surfaces. Neil will guide you through the steps that will allow you take home vibrant, accomplished pastel drawings and paintings. No experience is necessary. Materials required if bringing own supplies; willow charcoal, charcoal pencil, kneaded rubber eraser, soft (chalk) pastels, a can of high hold aerosol hair spray. Paper will be supplied.
Beginner Ceramics/Pottery
Instructor: Larry DuGuay
Date: Wednesdays, March 20th to May 1st (7 classes)
Time: 7pm to 10pm
Ages: Adults (14+)
Cost: $255 (includes clay, glazes and firing)

Students will be introduced to the properties of clay, wheel throwing techniques, some hand-building and studio practice. After glazing and firing, participants will have beautiful functional pottery or one of a kind works of art to take away.

OPEN STUDIO & GROUP EVENTS
CERAMIC OPEN STUDIO
Join us every Sunday afternoon from 2:30-6:00pm in the AU studio.
The open studio sessions are not instructed, however, a studio tech will be available to answer questions about our studio policy and procedures. Some previous experience, such as a beginners pottery class, is recommended.
Participants are welcome to use most tools and equipment; clay is not supplied. We do carry clay and tools for purchase.
Participation fee:
$5 per hour
The ceramic open studio is adults only. Please talk to us about upcoming kid's camps or possible family activities.
ACRYLIC PAINTING OPEN STUDIO
with Neil Graham
The first and third Wednesday of each month from
7-9pm
There are easels and water containers on site. Please bring your paints, brushes, supports and rags.
Drop-in sessions are a lot of fun. This is a great opportunity to get together with other painters in a studio and create and talk about art. You don’t have to be an artist to attend these drop-ins, you do however, have to have some experience with this medium.
Participation fee:
$10 per 2hour session
Ring the buzzer to the right of the Main Street entrance and someone will come upstairs and let you in.
