In this one-week afternoon camp, participants will create a shadow box and nature journal to record their explorations and observations of the world outside their door. We will incorporate studies of plants, animals and other elements from our environment by creating landscape drawings, pencil and watercolor studies, nature and eco-prints, air dry clay creations and more. We will allow plenty of space for exploration and imagination!

Camp Schedule

Monday: Taking it all in: Observing our Surroundings and Landscape Drawing

To start, we will look at images of art related to shadow boxes and discuss how we will bring a variety of elements together to create one.

  • We will head over to the park for a sensory activity to help us become aware of our surroundings.

  • Taking in our whole environment, we will discuss the elements of perspective and observations of light, which we will put to use creating a landscape which will serve as a backdrop for the shadow box.

Tuesday - Printing plants and flowers for journal pages

Campers start with a look at nature prints and the different materials and techniques used. We will chat about nature journaling, what that means, and how to choose words to help recall experiences and the part of nature we want to record in our journal.

  • Out the door we go to explore and gather natural elements

  • Back in the studio we will bind together paper and plants to create eco-print bundles ready for hot water setting.

  • Will pop back outside if time permits to do some more journaling

Wednesday: Hand Building animals and objects with air-dry clay

Which animals share our environment and what are their characteristics? Which might have special meaning to each of us? We will look at examples of clay sculptures of creatures for inspiration.

  • Over by the clay cliffs we will play with local clay in its wet/ dry states, talking about its properties

  • On our walk we will be on the lookout for animals, insects and other elements that might inspire our clay creations and create quick sketches as we go

  • Back at Arts Underground we will use air dry clay to create clay sculptures using the pinch-pot technique

Thursday - More Explorations in Nature Printing

We start the day unpacking the bundles students left in the hot pot to set on Tuesday!

While these are drying, we will take our journals back outdoors to take another look. We will use watercolour pencils to draw and paint. Students will gather leaves and materials to print back in the studio. Campers will try hammer printing, rubbings and direct printing using paint and traditional inks.

If time permits we’ll fold a few origami leaves.

Friday: Eco-Art and Painting

Beginning at Arts Underground we will look at some examples of eco-art and talk about using elements of nature to create art in its natural setting, exploring colour and pattern.

  • We will go for a walk and collect some elements, such as leaves and flowers, to create a mandala as a group

  • We will go over colour mixing and use acrylic paints to complete our sculptures and shadow box

  • We will finish by bringing together our creations from the week to assemble our shadow boxes
