In this 5 half-day kids camp, 8-12 year olds will learn about a variety of mediums and techniques used in making art. Encaustic, watercolour, pastel, acrylic, block printing, air dry clay and many of the variants will be included in this fast moving and engaging camp. Students will dig in and explore at least one new medium every day!

Day 1 – Chalk Pastel and Acrylic Painting

Our camp begins with a chalk pastel painting and a bit of instruction in composition and drawing. Our afternoon acrylic paint project is super fun because in honour of our pop artist influences Wayne Thiebaud and contemporary artist Noel Verrier, our live model will be a cupcake (which we later eat).

Day 2 - Encaustic Painting

Encaustic painting is an ancient technique that involves heat and wax – it is unlike working with any other medium. It is a very tactile and physical experience. We’ll talk about ancient Egyptian mummy portraits and the way encaustic is used in contemporary practice, including a look around the gallery. Students will create 2 encaustic paintings.

Day 3 - Block Printing/Watercolour Painting

Another super engaging way to make art is block printing which includes designing and carving a block or eraser, inking it and printing it. We’ll explore different printing materials, printing patterns/multiples and how to work with watercolour washes.

Day 4 – Air Dry Clay

As a stand-alone sculpture or as an element in a mixed media piece, clay is tactile, expressive and full of possibilities. Students will have the opportunity to learn hand-building techniques and use their carved blocks to imprint their clay.

Day 5 – Mixed Media Play Day

The last day of the camp we’ll paint the air-dry clay pieces and feature them on a frieze. Our final project will be a mixed media piece to explore some of the techniques introduced through the week. We will take some time to talk about and appreciate the gallery of work created.
