Opening Reception: September 4, 5-7pm
When creating this body of work, I was inspired by death as transformation. I was thinking about the structures and systems that need to end or undergo radical metamorphosis. These ideas often come as allegorical images incorporating aspects of the supernatural world. These concepts appear infused with elements of sincerity, reverence and humour. I also thought a lot about impressions and remnants being left behind, be it energetic or physical. The work I have created looks at these dimensions—seen and unseen—through a series of drawings, paintings, textile work and installations that speak to some of the aspects of change, death, and the stories that prevail.
My art practice explores contemporary mysticism, storytelling and intersectional feminism, through media that includes paint, sculpture, textiles, drawing, installation, performance and mixed-media art. I continually return to these concepts, which are part of a potent and emergent conversation and a site of continual learning. Through the use of both representational and abstract imagery, I try to explore the dimensions of these relationships.
